Top 5 common wedding mishaps... and how to avoid them

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

Weddings are joyous occasions filled with love and celebration, but sometimes unexpected mishaps can occur. By being aware of the most common things that can go wrong and taking proactive measures, you can minimize potential disruptions and ensure a smooth and unforgettable wedding day. Today I'm sharing the top 5 common mishaps at a wedding and how to avoid them!

Weather Woes

Outdoor weddings are susceptible to weather-related challenges, such as rain, extreme heat, or strong winds. To mitigate these risks, consider having a backup plan in place. Rent a tent or marquee for outdoor venues, or select a venue with indoor and outdoor options. Stay informed about the weather forecast and be prepared to make necessary adjustments or provide comfort measures like fans or heaters. Vendor Hiccups

Miscommunications or delays with vendors can cause stress on your wedding day. To avoid these issues, establish clear communication with each vendor and confirm all details in writing. Create a detailed timeline and share it with all involved parties to ensure everyone is on the same page. Designate a trusted point person or wedding coordinator to handle vendor coordination and troubleshooting on the day of the wedding.

A quick shameless plug here... this is also why you hire a wedding coordinator! It is our job to make all confirmations with vendors, ensure they arrive and do what they've been hired to do, and also put out any fires that happen!

Wardrobe Malfunctions

From a torn dress to a misplaced tie, wardrobe malfunctions can cause anxiety for the couple and their wedding party. To minimize the risk, ensure that all attire is properly fitted and altered in advance. Have a sewing kit and safety pins on hand for quick fixes. Assign a responsible person to keep an eye on wardrobe details throughout the day, checking for loose buttons, fallen hems, or any other potential issues.

Audio and Technical Glitches

Sound problems during the ceremony or reception can dampen the mood and disrupt the flow of the event. To avoid audio and technical glitches, hire a professional sound technician to set up and manage the sound system. Conduct thorough sound checks before the ceremony and reception to ensure everything is working properly. Consider having backup equipment available to address any unforeseen technical issues.

Timing Troubles

Timing issues can throw off the entire schedule of your wedding day. To stay on track, create a detailed timeline that accounts for every aspect of the event, including getting ready, transportation, photography sessions, and reception events. Share the timeline with all key parties, such as the wedding party, vendors, and family members. Assign a trusted individual, like a wedding coordinator (wink, wink) or a responsible friend, to keep an eye on the clock and help manage the flow of events throughout the day.

Remember... weddings are live creatives! While it's impossible to predict and prevent every potential mishap, being aware of common wedding challenges and taking proactive steps can help you navigate your special day with ease.
